“Is everything alright, Piper?” Uncle Rick asks as I sluggishly help him carry thick bails of hay from his truck to the barn.

“I’m fine.” I tell him with a sigh. “I just didn’t get much sleep last night.”

“Oh yeah?” Rick continues, stopping to wipe the sweat from his brow. “What’s the problem?”

“The new neighbors kept me up with all that racket.” I explain. “You didn’t hear anything?”

“I’m an old man.” Uncle Rick jokes. “My ears went a long time ago. Heard about those boys though, somebody in town told me they’re a bunch of musicians, came all the way out here to make a record or something. I guess they’re from Atlanta.”

“Well, I wish they’d head on back.” I confess, hoisting another bail out of the back of his truck.

I may be a little sluggish today, but I can still get the work done. I’m a country girl at heart, and it shows. I’m proud to say that these years of heavy lifting have given me a toned body that most city girls would die for. Out here, we eat well in the morning, and then work hard so we can play hard. I’m as fit as they come, with wavy blonde hair and beautiful fair skin dotted with cute, freckle constellations. I can handle one or two restless nights.

We finish loading the hay and take a rest in the shade by the side of the house. Aunt Karen brings out two glasses of lemonade and we imbibe readily.

“Sweetie?” She asks me. “When do you have class?”

“No class today.” I tell her.

“Oh. Could you be a dear and head into town to pick up a few things for me?” She hands me a long, hand-written grocery list, which I scan quickly and then fold to push into the back pocket of my jeans.

“Of course, Auntie K.” I tell her, hopping to my feet.

“Keys are in the truck.” Uncle Rick yells after me.
